How to Improve Your Presales Performance: 10 Practical Tips

Ten practical ways to get better at presales, from understanding the customer's business to storytelling and learning from feedback.

4 min readShare

As a presales consultant (opens in a new tab), you connect the technical side of the solution with the customer's needs. How well you translate technical features into business value can decide a deal. So how do you keep improving and stay sharp? Here are ten practical ways to get better at presales.

Understand Your Customer's Business Deeply

Start with the customer's business. Spend time researching their industry trends, challenges, and competitors. What are their pain points? What KPIs (opens in a new tab) matter to them?

When you understand your customer's world, you can tailor your demo and conversations to their goals. Skip the one-size-fits-all demo and show the features that solve their specific problems. That builds credibility and trust.

Master the Art of Storytelling

Customers don't just want to hear about features; they want to know how your solution will change their business. Tell a story that shows how your solution leads to real-world results. Use past success stories and case studies that align with the customer's situation.

Show how your solution makes their job easier, saves them time or increases revenue.

Collaborate Closely with Sales

Presales and sales need to work as one team. Agree on what the customer expects and what they want to achieve. If you join the sales process early, you know the strategy and can help sooner.

Talk often: Regularly check in with your sales colleagues to understand what's working and what's not. When you and the sales team are in sync, your demos and technical discussions move the deal forward faster.

Invest in Continuous Learning

Technology changes fast, and so do customer expectations. To stay competitive, you have to keep learning. That means new features of your product, industry trends and new sales methodologies.

Set aside time each week to improve your knowledge. Attend webinars, read industry reports, and ask for feedback from peers. The more you know, the more confident you'll be when talking to customers.

Refine Your Demo and Presentation Skills

A good demo can win the deal for you. Focus on simplicity and clarity. Show the most impactful features first, and avoid overwhelming your audience with unnecessary details. Always be prepared to adjust your presentation based on the customer's reactions and questions.

Practice. Regularly rehearse your presentations and ask for feedback. The more polished and concise you are, the more likely your message will resonate with potential clients.

Use Customer Feedback

After every presales engagement, seek feedback from your customers. Ask what resonated and where you could improve. The answers tell you how to adjust your approach and your messaging.

Develop Strong Technical Expertise

Soft skills matter, and so does a deep understanding of your product's technical side. With it, you can answer technical questions and concerns in presentations and demos with confidence. Keep up with product developments. Consider relevant certifications, which add to your credibility.

Build Cross-Functional Relationships

Engage with other departments like marketing, product development, and customer support. These teams give you a broader view of the product and of customer needs. What they know helps you tailor your presales approach.

Utilise Data and Analytics

Bring data into your presales process. Use analytics to understand customer behaviour, track engagement and spot patterns. Data helps you make better decisions and prove the value of your solution.

Improve Your Virtual Presentation Skills

Virtual meetings and demos are normal now. Take time to learn the tools and techniques for presenting online. Interactive elements and clear communication make an online demo as engaging as an in-person one.

Conclusion

Better presales performance comes down to connecting your solution to the customer's business challenges. Understand their needs, tell stories that fit, work closely with sales, keep learning and give clear demos. Focus on the value you bring to the customer's business, and the rest will follow.
