How to Start a Successful Presales Career: A Practical Guide
A practical guide to getting into presales: understand the role, build the skills, gain experience, find a mentor and network.
Are you curious about presales and thinking about a career in it? Presales, also known as solution consulting, is a rewarding field. You combine technical expertise with sales strategy. You help clients understand how your product or service can solve their problems.
In this article, I describe the steps to start a career in presales. They work even if you don't have much of a technical background.
Understand the Role of Presales
Presales consultants (opens in a new tab) sit at the intersection of sales, marketing, and technical teams. Your job is to connect what the sales team is selling with what the customer needs. In short, you will:
- Discover the client's needs and pain points
- Conduct product demonstrations
- Develop solutions that meet the customer's needs
- Assist the sales team in winning deals
- Handle objections and ensure the customer is confident in the solution
To get started, you need a good understanding of the products or services you are selling. More importantly, you need to enjoy solving problems. You will build trust with potential clients and proving that your solution is the best fit for them.
Build the Right Skill Set
Here are the key skills you will need to succeed in presales:
- Communication Skills: This is number one. You need to explain complex ideas in simple terms and speak confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Problem-Solving Mindset: Presales means understanding customer pain points and finding creative solutions.
- Technical Know-How: You don't have to be a software engineer. But you need a good understanding of your product's functionality, how it integrates with other systems, and how it solves business problems. Start by learning basic technical skills related to the field you are interested in.
- Presentation Skills: Product demos and presentations are a big part of your job. You will build and give presentations that show the value of your solution.
Gain Relevant Experience
If you are new to the industry, the best way to gain experience is by:
- Shadowing Presales Consultants: Reach out to people in presales roles and ask if you can shadow them during calls or demos. This gives you firsthand insight into the day-to-day role.
- Hands-On Learning: Start with the product or service your company offers. Learn as much as you can by playing around with the tools, running mock demos, and getting feedback.
- Customer-Facing Roles: Are you not in presales yet? Then roles like customer support, sales development, or account management teach you how to work with clients, which you need every day in presales.
Find a Mentor
Presales is a team role, and a mentor helps you learn faster. A mentor who's already in the field can guide you through the challenges. They also help you understand the finer points of the role. That includes how to handle tough client questions or deal with internal company politics.
Start Networking
Networking matters in presales. Connect with people in the field on LinkedIn, attend industry events, and join relevant forums and groups. Talking to others in the industry brings you new ideas and best practices.
Stay Curious
Technology and business keep changing, and a good presales consultant keeps learning. Subscribe to industry blogs, attend webinars and follow new developments in your field. Customers expect you to know what's new.
Highlight Your Skills
To break into presales, make sure to highlight the skills that translate well into the role on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Emphasize your communication, technical knowledge, and problem-solving abilities. If you've already been doing demos or supporting sales in some way, make sure to call it out.
Develop Industry Knowledge
Technical knowledge matters, but knowing the industry you sell into sets you apart. Customers appreciate it when you link their business challenges to what your product does. In finance, healthcare or manufacturing alike, knowing the trends and pain points makes you more credible.
Certifications and Courses
Consider acquiring certifications or taking relevant courses that can strengthen your technical expertise and sales acumen. For example, look at certifications in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) or project management (PMP, Agile). Sales methodologies such as Demo2Win! (opens in a new tab), Great Demo (opens in a new tab) or the PreSales Mastery Course (opens in a new tab) can also give you a competitive edge.
Understand Sales Methodologies
Presales is not purely sales. Still, it helps to understand common sales methodologies like consultative selling, limbic persona-based selling, or value-based selling. They help you work with the sales team and answer customer concerns during the sales process.
Final Thoughts
Presales is a busy and rewarding career that combines technical skills with a strong customer focus. If you love solving problems, working with clients and working with new technology, it could be a good fit for you.
To start, build the skills, gain experience and stay curious enough to keep learning.
Good luck!
